Both Kirby and Waheed return to Georgetown

Georgetown men’s basketball announced Monday that Coach Patrick Ewing has named Louis Orr Marshall Graves Jersey , Robert Kirby and Akbar Waheed as assistant coaches for the 2017 18 season.

Both Kirby and Waheed return to Georgetown having previously worked under Ewing’s predecessor, John Thompson III. Waheed, a holdover from last year’s staff, was hired in May 2016, and Kirby was an assistant on Thompson’s staff from 2010 through 2012 before departing for Louisiana State.

“I’m very excited to have experienced and well rounded coaches on my staff,” Ewing, who was hired on April 5, said in a release. “From the day I returned to my alma mater, my primary goal was to get my staff assembled and get our coaches out on the road and recruiting the best student athletes to Georgetown. We’ve been hard at work over the last two months getting our staff out there and we are excited about the future of Georgetown basketball.”

Orr and Kirby have been recruiting alongside Ewing despite never being formally introduced as part of the program. Now, Ewing heads into one of the busiest months of the recruiting calendar with plenty of experience by his side.

He recruited Wizards forward Otto Porter Jr. in his first year working for Thompson and has spent the years since he left Georgetown working in the South. A Memphis native, he was an assistant with the Tigers under Josh Pastner and served two separate stints at LSU, rising to associate head coach in the 2016 17 season.


Orr, who played six NBA seasons alongside Ewing in New York, was most recently the head coach at Bowling Green from 2007 through 2014. He headed Seton Hall’s program from 2001 until 2006.

Waheed fills a gap in Ewing’s staff as a local recruiter. A Washington native Reed Vial Jersey, Waheed graduated from Gonzaga and was an assistant coach at Niagara and Hofstra before returning to his home town to work under Thompson.

At least one key position on Ewing’s staff https://www.lsubasketballstore.com/jalyn-patterson-jersey-c-10.html, director of basketball operations, has yet to be announced. Ewing’s son Patrick Jr. held the job most recently, having been hired in August 2015, but Ewing said on the radio in April his son would not be allowed to keep the title because of a nepotism clause at Georgetown.
