C. Lions signed cornerback Dante Marsh to a contract extensi

Playoff positions will get decided and most games at least have something on the line as the NFL heads into the final week of the 2011 regular season. The Cowboys and Giants square off with the NFC East on the line, the Raiders and Broncos vie for the AFC West crown against divisional opponents and Cincinnati bids for a playoff berth as they host Baltimore. WASHINGTON (+8) at PHILADELPHIAWhile the Redskins passing game is as iffy as one would expect when Rex Grossman is prominently involved, they always seem to be able to find someone to run the rock and Evan Royster rushed for 132 yards on 19 carries against the Vikings last week. Speaking of the running game, the Eagles LeSean McCoy may be slowed (or even sidelined) by an ankle injury. Though he ranks second in the league with 1309 rushing yards, McCoy has been held under 40 rushing yards in three of the last five games. If McCoy is held out, Ronnie Brown figures to pick up some carries. While the Eagles have superior talent, in a game that means nothing in terms of a playoff spot, maybe the Redskins can surprise. TAMPA BAY (+11) at ATLANTAThe Bucs have been free-falling, WR Mike Williams has seven catches for 74 yards in the last three games combined and RB LeGarrette Blount has 11 carries for 32 yards in the last two weeks, which means that virtual unknowns and unprovens like Kregg Lumpkin and Mossis Madu -- both had 62 yards from scrimmage last week -- are getting the touches. After getting spanked by New Orleans, the Falcons should be primed to take care of business, yet, since they are going to be in the playoffs, it could be easy to call off the dogs once a lead is established. SAN FRANCISCO (-10.5) at ST. LOUISWith a shot at the first pick in the draft, the Rams have no motivation to win, yet it might not matter much even if they did. Theyve lost six straight, four by at least 17 points, including two shutouts and their QB is Kellen Clemens, who threw his first pass in Week 15 this season. Clemens 60 pass attempts over the last two weeks stands as the second-highest season total for him, behind only 250 glorious attempts for the Jets in 2007. The Niners have been relentless defensively and are responsible for one of the Rams shutout losses, but there is also the matter of San Francisco relying so heavily on K David Akers to score, getting threes instead of sevens. Its resulted in a 12-3 record, so who is to complain? But, if the Rams manage to score even 10 points (theyve averaged 14.4 in seven home games this season), it could make for a tough cover. CHICAGO (+1.5) at MINNESOTAThe Bears go into the game with Josh McCown making his second start at quarterback and Kahlil Bell starting at running back, so its not exactly the A-team for a club that has lost five in a row, but both McCown and Bell acquitted themselves well against Green Bay. Bell gained 159 yards from scrimmage and though McCown threw two picks, 19-of-28 for 242 yards was more than respectable. Minnesota goes into the game with Toby Gerhart once again their top running back, after Adrian Peterson wrecked his knee last week. Gerhart has gained more than 100 yards from scrimmage in three of the last four games, so he may help ease the pressure on QB Christian Ponder (or Joe Webb is Ponder suffers any ill effects from last weeks concussion). So, the game isnt exactly lighting up the marquee, but should be a nice opportunity for guys looking to find their footing in the league. DETROIT (-3.5) at GREEN BAYThe Packers are expected to rest their starters, so thats why the Lions are favoured at Lambeau Field, but the Lions biggest weapon, WR Calvin Johnson has been missing practice this week due to an Achilles issue, which would help level the playing field somewhat. However, when one team has something to play for and another has incentive to rest their starters, its easy to see why the expectation is for a Lions win. DALLAS (+3) at N.Y. GIANTSIn the game of the day, because of its win-or-go-home stakes, the Cowboys expect to have QB Tony Romo and RB Felix Jones in the starting lineup, which is necessary because last weeks combo of QB Stephen McGee and RB Sammy Morris didnt amount to much against the Eagles. With Romo healthy, the Cowboys have the passing game to compete with, and possible surpass, the Giants. The Giants are missing TE Jake Ballard, but should still have three dangerous wideouts -- Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham -- for Eli Manning and it will be up to Manning to rebound after his subpar performances the last two weeks. It should be a close game, as one would expect with the home team instaled as a field goal favourite. CAROLINA (+8) at NEW ORLEANSWith four wins (by an average margin of 18.5 points) in the last five games, the Panthers are a lively underdog and theyve been running the rock, playing to their strengths with running backs DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and QB Cam Newton. It would be a wise strategy against the Saints, since keeping Drew Brees off the field should be objective number one. Of course, the Saints could help in that regard by sitting Brees (and others) to keep him healthy for the playoffs. Otherwise, its going to be impossible to keep up with a Saints team that has scored more than 40 points three times in the last five games. The Saints also have great variety in their rushing attack. As Mark Ingram deals with a turf toe injury, Darren Sproles and Chris Ivory have been the leading rushers the last two weeks and Pierre Thomas always contributes (he has 921 yards from scrimmage this season). TENNESSEE (-3) at HOUSTONWith back-to-back losses the Texans are ripe for the picking and Tennessee is fighting for their playoff lives. Houston QB T.J. Yates has been serviceable -- really, better than that, considering hes the No. 3 quarterback -- but the passing game has been limited with Yates throwing and both WR Andre Johnson and TE Owen Daniels nursing injuries in recent weeks. Johnson is expected to play this week, so that would help the Texans chances. The Titans have a new weapon in TE Jared Cook, who has 272 yards receiving in the last two games, but they could really use the good Chris Johnson this week. Johnson has gained 100 yards from scrimmage six times this season and the Titans are 4-2 in those games, but hes run for a total of 134 yards in the last three weeks and 45 yards at Houston likely wouldnt be enough to earn a playoff berth. BALTIMORE (-2) at CINCINNATIThe Ravens have won five of six, but the last three wins have been against Cleveland (twice) and Indianapolis, so taking on a desperate Bengals team is a better test. In Week 11, the Ravens won 31-24, with the Bengals driving inside the Baltimore 10-yard line in the games final minute. Ravens QB Joe Flacco has passed for under 160 yards in three of the last four games and with WR Anquan Boldin sidelined, the Bengals can focus their coverage on rookie WR Torrey Smith and tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, none of whom is as dynamic as Bengals rookie WR A.J. Green. Of course, the Bengals passing game has been no great threat recently, either, with QB Andy Dalton averaging 164.3 passing yards in the last four games. PITTSBURGH (No Line) at CLEVELANDThe Steelers may choose to rest QB Ben Roethlisberger, even if he starts, for at least part of the proceedings and it didnt really hurt them to have Charlie Batch start at St. Louis last week. RB Rashard Mendenhall would probably like more Batch as it might influence the Steelers to use the running game more. For a team that has lost eight of the last nine games, the Browns have been competitive, losing by less than a touchdown in four of their last six defeats. RB Peyton Hillis is healthy and has run for 211 yards the last two weeks and with Seneca Wallace at QB, trying to grind out a win against the Steelers would be a reasonable hope for Cleveland. INDIANAPOLIS (+3.5) at JACKSONVILLEIf the Colts win, it could cost them the first pick in the draft, which is a huge disincentive to win, but its not like theyve had great incentive to win the last two weeks and, yet, they have. Based on talent, the teams are quite even, as the Jaguars dont have receivers that come close to Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon, but the Colts pedestrian running game cant match the Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew, who is poised to win the rushing title this season. That extra half point on the line seems big to me. N.Y. JETS (+2.5) at MIAMIOutscored 74-33 in the last two weeks, when wins could have pushed them into playoff position, the Jets now need some help, but they have to play as if a playoff berth is on the line. One problem, however, is that QB Mark Sanchez is struggling, particularly when it comes to getting the ball to wideouts Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress, making TE Dustin Keller and RB Shonn Greene the Jets most effective offensive performers. Since losing to the Jets 24-6 in Week Six, the Dolphins are 5-5, with four of the losses by a field goal or less. RB Reggie Bush has four straight games with at least 100 yards rushing and should be the Dolphins primary offensive weapon, considering the Jets have Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie on the corners to shut down (or at least limit) the passing game. Bush has missed practice this week due to a knee injury, so his status could have a significant effect. Rookie Daniel Thomas would be next in line if Bush cant run against the Jets. BUFFALO (+10.5) at NEW ENGLANDThe Bills snapped a seven-game slide by blowing out Tim Tebow and his congregation last week, but matters could be a little more challenging against a Patriots team that has won seven straight. There have been rumblings about Patriots QB Tom Brady having an MRI on his left shoulder, so the Pats offence may nto be operating at peak efficiency, but with a win clinching homefield advantage throughout the playoffs (to say nothing of exacting some revenge for a Week Three loss at Buffalo), expect the Pats to push the pace. When they turn to the ground, Stevan Ridley has been the leader lately, rushing for 129 yards over the last two weeks. In addition to Bradys injury, the Patriots have a depleted offensive line, which caused problems last week against Miami, so the Bills may be able to wreak some havoc on defence if they can pressure the passer. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has struggled since signing his contract extension, but the Patriots secondary is still a problem area, so Fitzpatrick has to take advantage and make some big plays. RB C.J. Spiller is helping Fitzpatrick out, providing more of a rushing threat (202 rushing yards over the last two games), to keep defences honest. SAN DIEGO (+3) at OAKLANDAfter mailing in last weeks loss to Detroit, the Chargers can still play spoilers against Oakland, but may have to do so without WR Vincent Jackson, who has a groin injury. Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown should see additional looks if Jackson cant play. Its not as if the Raiders have been explosive offensively with Carson Palmer at QB, scoring 16 points or fewer in three of the last four weeks, but they do have deep speed with wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore complementing the power running of Michael Bush. This game may come down to which QB is intercepted less -- Palmer has thrown 15 picks in nine games, while Rivers has tossed 19 in 15 games. KANSAS CITY (+3) at DENVERAs Denver tries to rebound from last weeks debacle in Buffalo, in the hopes of winning the AFC West with a win, there is an intriguing subplot with the Chiefs having Kyle Orton at quarterback. Orton, of course, was cut by the Broncos earlier in the year, in favour of Tebow. Orton has passed for 599 yards in two starts for the Chiefs, 161 yards more than Tebows best two-game passing yardage total this season. The Chiefs have had some moments of playing pretty sound defensively, allowing 17 or fewer points in four of the last five games. If they can contain Tebow and the Broncos running game, the Chiefs can also play spoiler. SEATTLE (+3) at ARIZONAThe game doesnt have any bearing on the standings, but both the Seahawks and Cardinals have played well down the stretch, with Seattle going 5-2 in their last seven, while the Cardinals are 6-2 in the last eight. Cardinals QB John Skelton has passed for 892 yards in the last three games so, along with WR Larry Fitzgerald, hell provide a good challenge for Seahawks CB Brandon Browner, the ex-CFLer who has been outstanding in his first NFL season. Seattle has played some sturdy defence, allowing 20 or fewer points in six of the last seven games, so it could be a tight game if both teams can keep the intensity up for one more week.
