ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Felix Hernandez didnt get the win. His dominant performance put the Seattle Mariners in position for victory, though. Hernandez struck out a career-high 15 in seven innings before Endy Chavez keyed a five-run ninth with a tiebreaking RBI single, leading the Mariners to a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. When asked what was working, Hernandez said "everything." "It was fun to go out there," he said. Rays manager Joe Maddon felt Hernandez was better than his perfect game against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012. "That changeup was a fastball until the last moment, then it became a changeup," Maddon said. "The man was outstanding." Ten of Hernandezs 12 swinging strikeouts came on changeups. James Jones had a two-run triple for the Mariners, who have won seven of eight. Hernandez had won his previous five starts, which was two away from tying the team record held by Jamie Moyer (2003) and Scott Bankhead (1989), but the Mariners were held scoreless until the ninth by Chris Archer and two relievers. King Felix scattered four hits. He remains winless at Tropicana Field, going 0-2 in four starts. "One of these days," Hernandez said with a smile. After Brad Miller hit a two-out triple and Willie Bloomquist walked against Grant Balfour (0-2), the left-handed hitting Chavez slapped a two-strike single to left for a 1-0 lead. Jones had his triple before Kyle Seager added a two-run double. "After watching that for about the last eight, nine years, its not lucky anymore," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of Chavezs hit. "I think its talent. Ive seen him do it time and time again." Yoervis Medina (3-1) threw a scoreless eighth for the win. Hernandez reached 1,800 career strikeouts when he struck out Evan Longoria to end the third. Hernandez struck out six through three innings, and 11 though five. This was the right-handers 29th double-digit strikeout performance, which moved him past Mark Langston into sole possession of second place on the Mariners career list. Archer gave up five hits over 6 1-3 scoreless innings. He is just 1-1 over his last five starts despite allowing just three runs in 31 innings. "The young man is pretty special," said McClendon about Archer. "Thats what you call a game for the purist." Tampa Bay has lost 12 of 13. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but failed to score. Archer got a forceout at the plate after making a stumbling grab on Jones comebacker before left fielder Matt Joyce made a one-handed at the wall on Robinson Canos opposite-field drive. Cano extended his road hitting streak to 17 games with a one-out infield single in the eighth. NOTES: Maddon on Balfours status as the ninth-inning man: "Hes our closer as of today. Even if I was going to change anything, I wouldnt tell you guys." ... After Mondays game at Tampa Bay, the Mariners return home Tuesday night to open a three-game series with a terrific pitching matchup. RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (4-2, 2.66 ERA) and Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (9-1, 2.02 ERA), former teammates with Rakuten of Japans Pacific League, are the scheduled starters. "Thats a match up that I would pay to see," McClendon said. "I think it will be a dandy." ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) felt fine one day after his first rehab start Saturday with Single-A Charlotte. He expects to be back before the All-Star break. ... Mariners OF Michael Saunders (sore right shoulder) and 1B Justin Smoak (sore left leg) were both out of the lineup for the second straight game. Smoak entered in the ninth as defensive replacement, while Saunders could return in the next few days. ... Bayern was unable to turn almost complete domination into goals at Leverkusen, despite boasting more than two-thirds possession and outshooting the home side by 27 shots to five. Toni Kroos fired Bayern ahead in the 29th minute, when Franck Ribery pulled the ball back for the unmarked former Leverkusen player to rifle his shot under the crossbar. Leverkusen pulled one back out of nothing a minute later, when goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed to deal with Lars Benders cross and then parried Sebastian Boenischs shot from the rebound to Sidney Sam, who scored from close range. Thomas Mueller should have restored Bayerns lead five minutes later when he headed over with the goal at his mercy, and Bayern missed a host more chances with Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno in inspired form. "Leverkusen played with 11 players and one of these players was Bernd Leno. When Leno is such an outstanding goalkeeper ..." Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. Mueller might have had a penalty in the second half, when he appeared to be pulled back by Omer Toprak, yet Bayern had ample other opportunities. "I dont know. We did everything," Guardiola said. "Congratulations to my players. Were first in the table. Im proud of our performance. We played very, very well. And thats football." Bayern moved one point ahead of Dortmund, which is level with Leverkusen after eight games. Dortmund dominated its game in Moenchengladbach but was dealt a blow when Mats Hummels was sent off after conceding a penalty by fouling Havard Nordtveit with 10 minutes to go. Max Kruse scored from the spot a minute later, five minutes before Juan Arango set up Raffael to seal Dortmunds first defeat of the season. "The defeat is down to our own stupidity," Dortmund winger Kevin Grosskreutz said. "Gladbach have a very good team, which we dominated over 80 minutes. If only wed scored." Dortmund had 27 shots on goal compared to the home sides six, but failed to get past Gladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. "The 2-0 was clearly undeserved after 90 minutes," acknnowledged Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre.dddddddddddd Dortmund came one game short of equaling the club record of scoring in 32 consecutive Bundesliga games. "Football can be unjust. We had to learn that at first hand today," Dortmund attacking midfielder Jonas Hoffman said. Elsewhere, promoted Eintracht Braunschweig defeated Wolfsburg 2-0 for its first Bundesliga win in 28 years, Mainz came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Hoffenheim, Schalke defeated 10-man Augsburg 4-1, and Stuttgart drew 1-1 at home with Werder Bremen. Braunschweigs win at local rival Wolfsburg was its first top-flight victory since a 2-1 win at Bayer Uerdingen on June 1, 1985. This is its first season back in the Bundesliga. "Its a very special day for the whole club," said Karim Bellarabi, who fired the visitors into the lead for the first time this season in the 31st minute. Wolfsburg dominated possession but Domi Kumbela secured the result on a counterattack in the 86th. "The pondering paid off this week," said Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht, referring to comments last week when he hinted at resigning after the 4-0 defeat at home to Stuttgart. In Mainz, Hoffenheim striker Kevin Volland marched past five defenders before unleashing a shot beyond Heinz Mueller in the 14th, and Robert Firmino chipped the goalkeeper eight minutes later. Mainz substitute Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting pulled one back in the 82nd, before captain Nikolce Noveski secured an unlikely equalizer in injury time. Bremen had Nils Petersons 37th-minute goal to thank for cancelling out Stuttgart striker Martin Harniks sixth-minute opener. Augsburg striker Sascha Moelders stunned Schalke fans in Gelsenkirchen when he fired the visitors ahead in the 10th minute. But Kevin-Prince Boateng equalized with a penalty six minutes later, after Ragnar Klavan was sent off for hauling down Adam Szalai. "Everyone saw the key moment of the game. We were very much in the game up to the sending off," said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl. Szalai made it 2-1 in the 28th, when Roman Neustaedter sprung the offside trap and Atsuto Uchida set him up for a simple finish, and the Hungarian striker grabbed his second in the 78th, before Max Meyer wrapped it up in the 87th.
