Smalling has found himself falling down the pecking order at United since the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager after failing to live up to expectations that he himself set with a dreadful season.
Smalling had been behind Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo last season for the starting positions and despite Marcos Rojo being injured for the remainder of 2017, the arrival of Victor Lindelof should see Smalling struggling to get more minutes last season with Jones and Lindelof competing for the one other starting position to go alongside with Bailly.Originally brought in by Sir Alex Ferguson from Fulham with the idea of him and Phil Jones being the eventual replacements for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Smalling has so far failed to live up to expectations with a very inconsistent career at Old Trafford.
