What I learned from getting this decision completely wrong t

I want to be honest about the timeline here because I think it matters for understanding why the mistakes happened. By the time I started looking for thesis editing and proofreading services I was exhausted, behind schedule and making decisions with a level of care that was completely inconsistent with the significance of what I was deciding. Both failures came directly from that state and both were entirely avoidable with the clearer thinking I would have brought to the decision six months earlier in the process. If you are reading this before you reach that stage please learn from my experience rather than repeating it.

The first failure came from not understanding what I was actually buying. I used the terms editing and proofreading interchangeably in my search and selected a service without ever establishing what their service actually included at a practical level. What I received was a document with grammar and spelling corrections and very little else — no engagement with argument flow, no attention to chapter transitions, no consideration of whether my academic tone was consistent across sections written at very different stages of the process. For a doctoral thesis that had taken three years to produce that level of surface engagement was genuinely inadequate and the time I spent going back through the document myself afterward was time I did not have to spare. The lesson was that thesis editing and proofreading services is not a single category — it is a spectrum of different levels of engagement and establishing precisely where any given service sits on that spectrum before committing is not optional.
